What is a Volume Calculator?
The Volume Calculator is a free, simple tool for calculating the volume of the popular 3D solids - whether a cube, sphere, cylinder, cone, rectangular tank (or box), or capsule. You choose your dimensions, choose your units (cm, m, in, ft, etc.), and you will receive your answer instantly and accurately. It's a perfect tool for students, architects, engineers, contractors, and anyone else who needs to determine volume fast and accurately for the purpose of assignments or homework, design, fabrication, or sourcing materials.
How Does the Volume Calculator Work?
- Select a Shape: Cube, Sphere, Cylinder, Cone, Rectangular Tank, Capsule, etc.
- Select the Units: cm, m, in, ft, yd, or km (be consistent).
- Enter your Shape's Dimensions: use side length, radius measurement, diameter measurement, height measurement, or length x width x height for dimensions.
- Click Calculate to derive your volume instantly and click on “Copy Output” if you need to keep a copy.
Tip: Try to keep all your inputs the same unit for height or depth. It's easier and avoids conversion errors.
Volume Formulas Used
- Cube: V = a³ (a = side)
- Rectangular Tank (Box/Prism): V = L × W × H
- Sphere: V = (4/3)πr³
- Cylinder: V = πr²h
- Cone: V = (1/3)πr²h
- Capsule (Spherocylinder): V = πr²a + (4/3)πr³ (a = cylinder length, r = radius)
Where:
- r is radius
- h is height
- π ≈ 3.14159
- r = D/2 (if you only know the diameter)
Key Benefits of Calcify's Volume Calculator:
- Fast and precise calculations with no manual math or estimations
- Multiple shapes from simple boxes to capsules
- Flexible units, and with an easy and clean copy-to-clipboard output
- Mobile friendly for field measurements and on-site checks.
- Great for education, engineering, construction, woodworkers, landscapers, and more.
- Assists in estimating required materials (concrete, water, soil, storage capacity).
Example Use-Case
- Cylinder: r = 5m ; h = 10 m → V = πr²h = π(5)²(10) → V = π × 25 × 10 → V = 250π ≈ 785.40 m³
- Rectangular Tank: L = 2.5m ; W = 1.2m ; H = 1.0m → V = 2.5 × 1.2 × 1.0 → V = 3.0 m³ (≈ 3,000 L)
- Sphere: r = 0.8m → V = (4/3)π(0.8)³ = V = 2.14m³
Having these quick calculations readily available are a great aid when it comes to; capacity planning, material ordering, and in classroom problems.
